Can I sign up before I arrive in Japan?

No. Before signing up you'll need a working telephone number and physical residence in Japan. Profiles in the GetStudents.net database without these are deleted.

Can GetStudents.net help me get a visa or come to Japan?

No. Please contact the immigration office with Japanese visa questions or coming to Japan. GetStudents.net staff is not trained to answer visa questions. Please do not sign up unless you hold a valid Japanese visa or other verifiable permission to be in Japan.

How long must I plan to be in Japan to use GetStudents.net?

Please sign up only if you plan to be in Japan for at least 4 months. We guarantee our students that our teachers will be able to teach them a langauge. Not suprisingly, students get irritated if the teacher they just started studying with announces that (s)he is leaving Japan soon.

How long before leaving should I delete my profile?

For the reason just mentioned, please remove your GetSudents.net profile 3 to 4 months before your departure from Japan or from teaching.

How much should I charge for a lesson?

You can charge any rate per lesson you wish. Typical prices per 1 hour private lesson range from 2500 - 3500 hour. Please check the profiles of other teachers in your area to see what the rates are there. In the sign up page, we offer a separate place for you to display your first lesson price. This can be set lower than your normal rate as an incentive to attract students.

How and when do I get paid?

Decide payment arrangements directly with the student either on the phone or email prior to the first meeting or during the first meeting. Many teachers offer a one time payment option for the first meeting so the student can "try" the lesson without further obligation. When the student decides they want to take the lesson on a regular basis, the most common payment method we have seen is the 4 times pre-paid method. It keeps student motivated to come to lesson and prevents you from having to waste time shuffling money back and forth t the end of each lesson (as happens in the pay-after-each-lesson method). Keep records on all payments to avoid problems.

How do I communicate with students who contact me?

Please use our bilingual guides to help handling incoming calls from students and another for communicating during the first lesson.

What should I talk about when students call?

Be ready to discuss your schedule, prices, schedule and teaching methods. The better versed you are in these things is highly related to your success at getting the student from merely contacting you to having them appear for a first lesson. Also, make sure these the things you say on the phone agree with the things dispalyed in your GetStudents.net profile.

What do I need to start?

To stay organized and keep things moving smoothly we recommend::

  • a schedule book
  • presentable teaching space
  • having a variety of teaching materials
  • file folders for each student/class you'll teach
  • having generic "first lessons" prepared for a few different levels of students
  • becoming persuasive and friendly on the phone (if you already aren't)
  • knowing how to explain to students how to get to your teaching location (if you don't already know)
  • having some business cards printed
